“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” – Psalm 19:14
Speech is the unique ability given to man unlike all of God’s other creation. Yet if not used well it can cause the most disastrous consequences for him! The Psalm for our meditation today points to two kinds of speeches from two sources: one which is not audible – from the heavens and the other which is audible from human beings on earth.
A WITNESS WITHOUT WORDS (Psalm 19:1-4)
The heavens and the skies proclaim the LORD’s greatness without speaking yet it resounds to all the earth! Vs 4 says, “Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.” What is their message? They proclaim the glory of God and his craftsmanship. Many would not even think if the sun doesn’t come up that day what would happen!! Yet many others forget to even take a peep into a golden morning with the rising sun or a painted sky with vibrant hues- all because they are caught up with the busy schedules of life! Each sunrise/sunset is an awesome witness to the craftsmanship of the great Creator who put the universe- the sun, the stars, and all of the seasons in their respective order and it just bears witness that to the intelligent Creator who holds everything by the word of HIS Power!!! (Hebrews 1:3)
A WITNESS WITH WORDS (Psalm 19:14)
Then comes the role of man who has to bear witness to the ONE who created him and breathed into him His very breath! Knowing your Creator GOD and being His witness is the role of every child of GOD who has made a relationship with Him. Sinful, fallen man cannot know a holy God unless he first deals with his sin. There is the provision GOD Himself has made through His Son Jesus Christ to be made right with Him by putting your faith in Him! Once you make that connect, you are called to bear witness to the Living God who has not just given you the gift of physical life on this earth but the gift of eternal life in Him even when your life is over on this earth.
The key to being a good witness with our words and life is having our life and our mouth aligned with GOD and His Word! Vs.9 talks of the fear of the LORD which is enduring forever- that has to be at the centre of one’s life! Vs.7-10 speak of the benefits of God’s Word- refreshes the soul; gives joy to the heart; gives light to the eyes; like honey it rejuvenates the body!- sufficient for our whole being! Besides it’s the Word that warns us, shows us our hidden faults thus bringing correction so that our lives and our mouth can be aligned to be God’s witness!
Such a person is a powerful witness to the Living GOD of the Universe! Moreover, empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8), he/she becomes a witness of Jesus Christ his/her Saviour, to the whole world. If we need to be a powerful witness for Him, this prayer at the end of the Psalm has to be our own constantly: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
“Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise…” ~ Words from Hymn
