THE PEOPLE OF COVENANT

Exodus 24:1-18

Monday, 14 March 2022

So Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”-Exodus 24:8

After three months of getting out of their centuries- old slavery, the Children of God have come to Mount Sinai – where God initiated the process of transforming them into a nation who would be His witness! In Exodus 19:5 God told them “Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples...” In Deut. 4:20, Moses made it very clear “But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, from Egypt, to be people for His own possession, as today.”

The purpose of God in bringing His people out of their bondage was to make them God’s own possession! However there is a process! Since they were under slavery for centuries together, they had forgotten their identity and their God!! Now God was giving them a new identity. Their identity relied on who their God is! The conduct of their lives need to reflect the standard of their God! So, God gave them the Ten Commandments and various laws –social, religious and ceremonial, which would carve a unique identity for them. For through it they would project a God who is holy, merciful, compassionate and loving!!

Therefore, God entered into a covenant with them! The effect of that covenant was surely for the benefit of the people, not for God! He is Almighty and does not need the support of humans. But to help His people always know who they are, God covenanted with them. In our key verse, the institution of this covenant is explained – it was through sprinkling of the blood of the sacrificed animal on the people!!

This typifies the work of God through Jesus Christ in our lives!! Jesus, the Lamb of God became the Ultimate sacrifice for sinful man and His blood was poured out for the remission of sin of all mankind. Jesus in instituting the New Covenant through His blood spoke of it in the Last Supper with His disciples: “…for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.”(Matthew 26:28). When a person accepts Christ’s death on his behalf as a penalty for the sins he has committed, his sin is forgiven and he enters into a new covenant with God through Christ!

Just as God wanted to shape the lives of His covenanted people, He wants to shape the life of each individual who has entered into a covenant relationship with Christ through the Blood of the Covenant. The ultimate aim?—so we would become His own prized possession! But for this to happen, one has to yield to Him to be moulded into Christ’s image. If only we would grasp His great love in reaching out to us and His great sacrifice in giving His own life to make us right with God!

God has His best for us on His heart and wants us to enjoy living with Him in that covenant relationship so that the outworking of His plan for each of our lives will blossom. Would you dear brother/sister yield to Him to mould you? If you have run away from His love, today He is beckoning you back to Him to respond in repentance and honour the Blood of the Covenant by which you entered into a covenant with Him! Understand your identity in Him and be His witness!

Think on: “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace…” Ephesians 1:7
